What Is Clubfoot?

Clubfoot is a foot deformity present from birth that affects a baby’s bones, muscles, tendons, and blood vessels. In children with clubfoot, the front half of an affected foot turns inwards and the heel points down, resembling a club. About half of children who have clubfoot have it in both feet. While this condition is not painful for babies, early treatment is highly recommended to ensure that the child can eventually walk and perform other functional activities. Clubfoot is typically treated by using a series of casts and braces to rotate the child’s foot into the correct position over time. Children who complete treatment typically grow up to have normal function in their feet. For more information about this condition, consult with a podiatrist today.

Making sure that your children maintain good foot health is very important as they grow. If you have any questions, contact Dr. Christine Quinn of New Jersey. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.

Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.

Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.

Be watchful for any pain or injury.

Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.

Psoriatic Arthritis and the Feet

Like other types of arthritis, psoriatic arthritis can cause inflammation and swelling of the joints, including those in the hands and feet. This type of arthritis tends to affect people who have a skin condition called psoriasis. About 5-10% of people with psoriasis also develop psoriatic arthritis. In the feet, this type of arthritis can make the joints feel stiff and painful, and can cause swelling, heat, and redness in the surrounding tissues. Sausage toes, or the medical term known as dactylitis, is a condition that refers to the swelling of an entire toe or finger. This sausage-like appearance happens when the small joints in the toes or hands, as well as the entheses of the surrounding tendons, become inflamed. If you have psoriatic arthritis that affects your feet, it is recommended that you see a podiatrist to help you maintain your foot health.

Arthritis can be a difficult condition to live with. If you are seeking treatment, contact Dr. Christine Quinn from New Jersey. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Arthritic Foot Care

Arthritis is a joint disorder that involves the inflammation of different joints in your body, such as those in your feet. Arthritis is often caused by a degenerative joint disease and causes mild to severe pain in all affected areas. In addition to this, swelling and stiffness in the affected joints can also be a common symptom of arthritis.

In many cases, wearing ill-fitting shoes can worsen the effects and pain of arthritis. Wearing shoes that have a lower heel and extra room can help your feet feel more comfortable. In cases of rheumatoid arthritis, the arch in your foot may become problematic. Buying shoes with proper arch support that contour to your feet can help immensely.

Alleviating Arthritic Pain

  • Exercises that stretch the foot can prevent further pain and injury and increase mobility
  • Most of the pain can be alleviated with anti-inflammatory drugs, heat, and topical medications
  • Massages can help temporarily alleviate pain.

It is best to see your doctor for the treatment that is right for your needs and symptoms. Conditions vary, and a podiatrist can help you determine the right method of care for your feet.

How Should Dance Shoes Fit?

Many people who enjoy ballroom dancing realize the importance of wearing shoes that fit correctly. It is beneficial to have dance shoes fit snugly, and it is suggested to try on shoes that are a half size smaller than your street shoes. Specific foot action is required in many dance steps, and dance shoes are constructed differently than ordinary shoes. Dancers understand that wearing shoes which have a tighter fit may be able to provide more control, and they can feel like they are part of the feet. A perfect fit consists of the toes reaching the top of the shoe with little or no wiggle room. This may help in providing the ability to correctly perform dance steps in which the feet are pointed. If  you would like additional information about how to purchase dance shoes that are good for your feet, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist.

It is important to find shoes that fit you properly in order to avoid a variety of different foot problems. For more information about treatment, contact Dr. Christine Quinn from New Jersey. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Proper Shoe Fitting

Shoes have many different functions. They cushion our body weight, protect our feet, and allow us to safely play sports. You should always make sure that the shoes you wear fit you properly in order to avoid injuries and deformities such as: bunions, corns, calluses, hammertoes, plantar fasciitis, stress fractures, and more. It is important to note that although a certain pair of shoes might be a great fit for someone else, that doesn’t mean they will be a great fit for you. This is why you should always try on shoes before buying them to make sure they are worth the investment. Typically, shoes need to be replaced ever six months to one year of regular use.

Tips for Proper Shoe Fitting

  • Select a shoe that is shaped like your foot
  • Don’t buy shoes that fit too tight, expecting them to stretch to fit
  • Make sure there is enough space (3/8” to ½”) for your longest toe at the end of each shoe when you are standing up
  • Walk in the shoes to make sure they fit and feel right
  • Don’t select shoes by the size marked inside the shoe, but by how the shoe fits your foot

The shoes you buy should always feel as good as they look. Shoes that fit properly will last longer, feel better, and improve your way of life each day.

Ingrown toenails can be painful. They occur when the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin. Other than pain, you may also notice symptoms such as redness or swelling of the surrounding area. In some cases, ingrown nails can be treated at home. Begin by soaking your foot in warm, soapy water several times per day for 10-20 minutes. After each soak, dry the affected toenail and place a small piece of clean, wet cotton under the nail near the corner where it is ingrown. This process can help lift the nail from the skin and allow it to grow properly. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting shoes during this process. If symptoms do not improve within 2-3 days, or if they worsen at any point, it is recommended that you see a podiatrist. A podiatrist can treat stubborn, persistent ingrown toenails and teach you how to prevent ingrown toenails from developing in the future.

Ingrown toenails can become painful if they are not treated properly. For more information about ingrown toenails, contact Dr. Christine Quinn of New Jersey. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails occur when a toenail grows sideways into the bed of the nail, causing pain, swelling, and possibly infection.

Causes

  • Bacterial infections
  • Improper nail cutting such as cutting it too short or not straight across
  • Trauma to the toe, such as stubbing, which causes the nail to grow back irregularly
  • Ill-fitting shoes that bunch the toes too close together
  • Genetic predisposition

Prevention

Because ingrown toenails are not something found outside of shoe-wearing cultures, going barefoot as often as possible will decrease the likeliness of developing ingrown toenails. Wearing proper fitting shoes and using proper cutting techniques will also help decrease your risk of developing ingrown toenails.

Treatment

Ingrown toenails are a very treatable foot condition. In minor cases, soaking the affected area in salt or antibacterial soaps will not only help with the ingrown nail itself, but also help prevent any infections from occurring. In more severe cases, surgery is an option. In either case, speaking to your podiatrist about this condition will help you get a better understanding of specific treatment options that are right for you.

How Your Diet Can Affect Your Gout

If you have ever experienced a gout attack, then you are familiar with the sudden onset of pain, usually in the big toe, and its debilitating effects. It is believed that your diet can play a role in managing gout. Certain foods and beverages, such as sugary foods, foods high in purines, alcohol, and soda, are thought to trigger gout attacks. Avoiding these foods may help reduce your risk of a gout attack. On the other hand, there are also certain foods and beverages that are thought to reduce the risk of gout attacks. These include cherries and other foods with high vitamin C content, like oranges, strawberries, pineapples, and bell peppers. Drinking plenty of water may also help. If you experience frequent gout flare ups in the feet, it is suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist.

Gout is a foot condition that requires certain treatment and care. If you are seeking treatment, contact Dr. Christine Quinn from New Jersey. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.
